The social issue is that by attacking the Proton Mail service with a DDOS attack, society is being hurt as they are losing what could be a main form of communication to some users. The two main issues here are social and ethical. This attack was so massive that other companies under the same ISP were suffering service interruptions due to the ISP’s hardware being overloaded. Later that day, Proton Mail was hit by another DDOS attack from a different group. They were under attack for 15 minutes, during which time customers were unable to access their service. Proton Mail did not pay the ransom and as such they were met with a DDOS attack. However, in the first week of november, Proton Mail was met with a threat, either they pay a ransom and continue their operations, or they don’t pay up and suffer a DDOS attack thus preventing their customers from accessing their service. As such, it could be argued that Proton Mail is providing a significant public service and ensuring their uptime is crucial for the continued safe, and private communications of the public. By providing the public with tools for encrypting their communications, they make it harder for government agencies to spy on them and read their messages or other data.

End to end encryption has gained significant interest from the public since Edward Snowden’s leaks about the NSA and other government agencies spying on their citizens. They’ve been running since last year after a highly successful kickstarter which brought in five times the amount they were asking for. Proton Mail is a Geneva based company which provides an encrypted mail service under the same name.
